Strategies 2011 Salon & Spa Game-Planning Retreat

So our Lavish team leaders recently made their way to Connecticut for a semi-annual training conference called Strategies. It's basically a motivational, educational, business management and tools course that helps to motivate the staff of a company and give them new ideas to boost their energy as a team and the productivity of the business as a whole. Those who go always come back saying one thing...it will change your life.

As an outside perspective I can tell you it really does change those who go and personally experience it. Our leadership team, Samantha, Cecy, Sarah, and Nicole went together this year, leaving the rest of us LG's anxiously waiting to hear new the ideas and gain a new energy around the salon. I could tell as soon as they came back there was a whole new vibe around them and their motivation level had shot through the roof.

I asked the girls to share what their experience was like going for the first time, here's what Cecy shared with me...
"Well, it was a very good learning experience. I got to see things in a different way, meaning I got the chance to really understand how this business can and can't work. Definately VERY motivating and many helpful ideas were provided to keep our salon open for business with happy clients and happy employees. It also helped me see that things don't happen over night, but rather in time with a strong built team. I also learned that it isn't easy coming back to reality and getting your team on that same bus to success that your ready to take, becsuse they weren't there to "live" that same experience. But I believe that this experience is going to help us get our team in that bus to success. And we'll c y'all at the top! :) "

Sarah had never been before, and she told our team that she really wasn't looking forward to it, and kind of expected it to be a waste of time. She has a family to take care of as well as her clients and just other things more important that she felt couldn't be disregarded at home that wasn't worth leaving for 4 days. Well, let's just say she seemed to have the most impact from the trip! She came back to us with such high hopes for Lavish, and an incredible motivation for helping the business grow and that if we could all work together on this and keep our energy up, our numbers would follow leading us to further success.

Samantha is a verteran of this conference and enjoys the experience every year. Here's how she felt about this year! "I was glad for them to see the business side of it and how much there is to a salon besides doing hair and how much we can truley grow. The potential our industry has and how big we can become really opened their eyes to the bigger picture. They saw the vision of where I want to take the salon and how much we can work to success as we work together versus as individuals."

Last but not least, the other front face of the salon Nicole shares with me what she learned on the trip. "Basically I really saw and learned the business aspect of salons. You see what you have to do to build not just as a salon but as a company. It was really motivating."

So there you have it. I know I was influenced by the girls, it just made me want to go next year so I can submerge myself into what it feels like to have that drive. Next year the conference is in Texas, yeehaw! Hopefully all the Lavish Girl's can go together so we can become your salon family even more and take care of the business so it benefits all of us in the best interest.

Fall Forecast for Haircolor!

Plan for a warm forecast this fall! Unfortunately, we’re not talking about the weather—we’re talking haircolor. As the temperatures begin to drop, get ready to warm clients up with dark chocolate brunettes, deep mahogany redheads and golden blondes. Here are celebrity haircolor inspirations to get you ready for fall...

BRUNETTES

According to colorists in-the-know, fall 2010 is the season of the brunette. To keep your brunettes on-trend, it’s best to create dark, rich hues—think Katie Holmes’ rich chocolate or Anne Hathaway’s deep multi-tonal hue. Here’s a formula similar to Katie’s sought-after brown shade.

REDHEADS

Color pros are telling us that redheads this season will be fiery and deep—so get ready to create some serious vavavoom! With Mad Men returning to the airwaves, we’re sure clients will be clamoring for a hue just like the sultry starlet Christina Hendricks. This vibrant red formula is sure to do the trick.

BLONDES

Warm up your blondes with light buttery and honey hues and a slightly darker base, like Kate Bosworth. Try this blonde formula to get your blondes ready for fall.

Brandy's Hair Hero

When I think of My Hair Hero, the first person that comes to my mind is my grandma. I would say somehow she is the “beginning” of the reason for me becoming a hairstylist. I remember when I was a little girl, Id go with her to the salon to get her hair done. She would go once a week to get her “roller set”, which I might add she still loves to get those dang things!! I’m slowly but surly going to phase her out of that look. :) I remember sitting in the salon watching all the women getting their hair done. My grandma from what I remember would color her hair black or almost black and always have her big bouffant. Every time I would go into a salon, I remember thinking to myself how much I liked the environment. I liked the smell, the music, all the girls. It seemed to always be a fun place to work. I was right! Now nine years after being a licensed cosmetologist I absolutely love it. I have never been regretful of the career choice I have made for myself. Now as time has gone by I would say “I” am my own “Hair Hero”. I love to color hair, cut hair, do formal styles. I like the relationships you get to build with your clients. I enjoy traveling all over when I can for education. I always come back very inspired, plus seeing different places of the world is so exciting. Meeting new people and other hairstylists are just another plus. I don’t think there is anything Id rather do. After I was settled into my career and working in a salon I had set goals for myself. Back then my ultimate goal was to be able to go to New York City and take a class at an academy. I thought that would be so awesome. And yes… I did it! I went about 5 years ago. I went to the Matrix Academy. I won a scholarship, based on color sales. The experience was amazing, and everything I had imagined. Now my future goal is to be able to work on photo shoots, behind the scenes, and most of all to be able to work backstage at a fashion show/ Fashion Week. The chaos, the adrenaline, all the excitement of getting ready for the biggest fashion in the world, would just be….

….. beyond amazing. I don’t think words can describe what I would feel at that moment. There are many celebrity hairstylist that I like, and I definitely get inspired by. And of course who wouldn’t love to travel almost anywhere, and be on location for different events. Besides all that, to be known as a celebrity hairstylist.

(WOW!) In the end this is why I consider myself to be my own “Hero”. They have all accomplished their own goals, just like my self. If I love what I do, and achieve all that I can, then who else would be my Hero? Everyone else and every other celebrity stylist are all parts of my inspirations leading up to Me… “My Hair Hero”. =)

Salina's Hair Hero

“Who’s your Hair Hero?” I was asked that question and I really didn’t know the answer. I sat and thought about it and the answer was very clear. When I think of the most influential person in my life that has lead me in my career path I always think of God. He has given me the motivation and drive to follow this path by simply praying and asking to be guided in the right direction. There are a few people that I can think of and thank for helping in my path in becoming a hairstylist but there is one person that I believe brought me to where I am today and I can say that he is truly my Hair Hero.

After high school I was accepted to California State University of San Bernardino. After a few years there and with much needed prayer I decide that wasn’t for me. I asked God to guide me into the right direction and to find a career that best suited me. I had considered trying to get into the Cosmetology program at Riverside Community College but it was very difficult to get into at the time. I found out from a friend that the cosmetology program was accepting applications online on the following Monday but there was a catch; In order to get in you had to be one of the first 50 to apply. So that Monday at 8:00 am sharp I applied and a few weeks later I received a letter that I got in. It was then that I realized that that was the path that God had intended for me to follow.

I was working full time and attending the night program which was very difficult. With the help of prayer I got through two years of school and still managed to be working full time. I enjoyed going to school this was actually something that I had fun learning. There were times when I wanted to give up because I was just so overly stressed and it was taking a toll on my body. I asked God to help me through if this was the career path that I was meant to follow. Again I made it through the program with good grades and passed my State Board exam. At last I was a licensed Cosmetologist.

Over all I think that the Lord has blessed me in finding a career that I enjoy and love and without knowing and having him in my life I may have been lost in finding myself. Not only has he helped me find a great career he has also help me over come the obstacles I was faced with on my path to becoming a hairstylist. He continues to help and push me towards greatness with the help of those around me. He is who I have to thank and for this reason he is my Hair Hero.

Men's Month Client Spotlight

Spotlight Name: Nick (NickNack) Huicochea
Occupation: Radio Personality/ Production Director 99.1 KGGI
Age: 27
Links: facebook, twitter, PartyUp! Entertainment (under construction)

Why did you choose to join this industry?
I kind of fell into the radio industry. I started when I was 19, and was focused on acting and modeling with a long term goal of being on TV, being on camera. The radio business was local and I thought it would help jump start my career, but I ended up sticking to it.

What is your favorite part of your job?
It really allows me to express my creativity and share my passion with others. It makes me feel good that others are having a good time because of what I do.

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
What time?! haha. I hardly have any time outside of work, but when I do have time off I honestly just like being at home lounging. I do love shopping! I have a shoe fetish and I'm always buying t-shirts.
Where do you like to shop? Anywhere the deals are good!

What motivates you?
I watch MTV cribs at least once a week. It shows where I want to be at and that these people made it, so can I. I also have my own "movement" haha. It's called the GOYA movement and it stands for "Get Off Your A**" ya know, if you think of something to do, just go! Even if it starts with cleaning your room, it's not gonna get done unless you get up and do it. An example for me would be that about a year ago I decided I wanted my own house, so I started taking the steps to get there and now I have my own house!

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?
I would have to say Will Smith. I've followed his career for so long and his background is very motivating. He's the perfect GOYA advocate, he's won Grammys, Academy Awards, and the Fresh Prince episode where he was crying because of his dad sold me on his acting. He's so talented.

What attracted you to Lavish?
Can I say the owner ;) haha, but really I heard through friends, not only girls but guy-wise. Always the highest regards spoken about it. Sam has comprised an incredible team.

What advice would you give someone who's thinking about making a career in the radio industry?
Jump on it. Whether it works out or not, just try it and grow. Once you find your talent, perfect it.

What is your favorite product at Lavish?
Bumble & Bumble Sumotech pomade and KMS dry wax...and that automatic soap dispenser in the men's bathroom! hahaha

Who has had the greatest influence on your career and why?
In terms of being more consistent, it would have to be my mom. She's supported me all the way in anything I tried. In high school, before I had gone into radio, I had mentioned that one day I wanna make it to the Grammy's, and in the program at one of our concerts she bought an ad space that was a shoutout to Nick, by Mom, and it said "See you at the Grammy's". She'll talk about what I do wherever she goes, even the grocery store! As far as those in the industry having influence, everyone at the station has grown with me. They have been "molding" me since I was 19 and are like my family.

Share one thing interesting about yourself that people typically don't know.
I hate spiders, if I was standing next to you and saw one I'd make you kill it!

What's your favorite thing about Lavish as a whole?
The talent. Not only that I've seen on myself, but my friends who've come out of there. The dive, persistence, ads...the environment. I know I won't leave there unsatisfied ever.

Thanks to Nick for sharing everything with us. Check out his links and help support him not only at KGGI, but for his fresh Entertainment label PartyUP! Entertainment. More spotlights to come later this month :)

Enjoy and stay Lavish <3
